TasRail funding to drive $5m safety upgrades in Tasmania
14.08.2025
TasRail funding of $5 million will deliver priority safety upgrades across Tasmania, improving infrastructure at 10 level crossings and reducing risks for road users and train crews. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

TasRail funding targets priority safety projects
TasRail has secured $5 million for major safety improvements, with $4 million from the Federal Government’s Regional Level Crossing Upgrade Fund (RLCUF) and $1 million from the Tasmanian Government. Together, these investments will target 10 high-risk locations.

Ulverstone will see the most upgrades, including five active crossings at Main Street, Reibey Street, Buttons Avenue, Alexandra Parade, and Water Street. Crews will also add augmented stop signs at three passive crossings and install yellow box markings to reduce vehicle queuing risks.
TasRail funding supports broader rail safety strategy
On the Melba Line, the Oonah Road crossing will be upgraded from passive to active with lights and bells, improving driver awareness. TasRail aims to finish all projects by September 2026.
CEO Steven Dietrich emphasized that the improvements are vital because incidents at level crossings impact locomotive drivers, emergency services, and communities. He urged road users to remain vigilant and follow the rules to prevent tragedies.
During Rail Safety Week, Federal Minister Catherine King highlighted that Australia has over 23,000 level crossings where vehicles and trains intersect. She stressed that targeted funding is essential to reducing accidents and saving lives.
In 2024–25, incidents of motorists ignoring stop or give way signs in Tasmania more than doubled, rising from 68 to 137 cases. All regions—North, Northwest, and South—reported sharp increases, with two collisions recorded during the year.
While TasRail’s projects will significantly enhance safety, Dietrich reminded the public that infrastructure alone cannot eliminate risks. Because compliance by drivers is essential, he urged everyone to treat crossings with caution and respect.
