Ilkhom Makhkamov, the Minister of Transport, stated that although funding for the project has not been allocated yet, it remains a priority for Tashkent. He emphasized that the tram system could play a key role in connecting the capital with New Tashkent, which is vital for the city’s infrastructure.

Resources will first be directed towards other important infrastructure projects, which will speed up the realization of larger initiatives.

How the Tram System Will Transform Tashkent’s Transport Infrastructure

According to Tashkent’s General Plan through 2045, the tram system will become an integral part of the city’s transport system, especially for its suburbs. Construction of the first facilities in New Tashkent began in the spring of 2024, and reviving the tram is part of a long-term plan to develop environmentally friendly electric transport.

In the summer of 2023, Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced that a tram line or overhead metro would be built to connect Tashkent with New Tashkent. This project aims to improve transportation accessibility between these two important parts of the city, helping reduce road traffic and improving the environmental situation.

The Ministry of Transport previously confirmed that building a tram line between Tashkent and New Tashkent is a priority project. The authorities plan to attract international investors to speed up the implementation process and provide modern transportation connections.

In 2022, during Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s visit to Paris, an agreement was signed with the French company Alstom for the tram line project in Tashkent. At that time, construction was planned to begin in the second quarter of 2024, but it has not yet started. The length of the line will be 9.1 kilometers, and the expected daily passenger traffic is 78,000 people.

The Future of Tashkent with the New Tram System

The project is valued at €167.4 million, and Tashkent authorities are actively negotiating with foreign partners to attract investments. The tram system will become a key element of the city’s transportation infrastructure, improving connectivity between various districts and the new suburb.

The tram project is part of a broader strategy to develop environmentally friendly transport in Uzbekistan. The country’s authorities aim to improve the ecological situation in large cities by reducing harmful emissions from vehicles. Trams, as a form of electric transport, will help reduce road congestion and improve the city’s ecology.

The government of Uzbekistan continues to develop innovative transport systems to meet the growing needs of the population. As part of the city’s infrastructure modernization program, new projects will be introduced, including metro expansion and the development of other forms of green transport.

Thus, reviving the tram system in Tashkent will be an important step toward improving the city’s infrastructure and contributing to its development in line with future environmental standards.
