Key developments during Sydney Metro West construction

Over 28,000 tonnes of concrete have already been deposited to fill the floor of the cavern. The construction goes 180 meters long, 28 meters broad, and 20 meters high. Thus, the size highlights the scale of the industry.

The workforce began waterproofing and lining the turnback and cavern tunnels, which extend 1.2 kilometers beyond the platforms. The tunnels will permit the reversing of trains and the smooth movement of commuters through the expanding metro network.

Tunnelling and station development milestones

The lining work will require 12,000 tonnes of reinforcing and more than 110,000 tonnes of concrete, along with more than 50,000 square meters of waterproof lining. At the same time, 38 percent of the lining work for the cavern has already been completed.

Two surface shafts are also in construction. The principal entrance and exit points to the future Hunter Street Station will be well connected to George Street, Light Rail, Wynyard and Martin Place stations.

Sydney West tunnelling nears completion

Tunnel boring machines Jessie and Ruby are preparing for their final 1.1-kilometer drive beneath the Darling Harbour. When they break through at Hunter Street, it will be the final breakthroughs at the tunnelling stage for the Sydney Metro West.

Currently, approximately 230 employees work at the site daily. The cave should also be completed by the end of 2026. When completed, the station would be a vital commuter and tourist interchange at the central business district in Sydney.
