Sydney Metro Unveils Major Progress on Bankstown Station Upgrade
21.07.2025
Sydney Metro has revealed significant progress at Bankstown Station, now 80 percent complete, as it prepares for rapid metro services connecting Sydenham and Bankstown next year. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
More than 100 workers remain on-site daily to deliver key upgrades at this critical interchange. The century-old station is being transformed to provide a fast, reliable, and fully automated transport system for Sydney’s southwest commuters.

Sydney Metro Station Upgrades and Features
Construction of the new Sydney Metro entrance at the eastern end is in its final phase. Crews are paving the concourse, installing 19 Opal gates, and completing the 170-metre platforms with glazed balustrades and platform screen doors for improved safety.

Interior works inside the metro station are also progressing, including ceiling installations and back-of-house room fit-outs. Across the street, the new Sydney Trains entrance is nearly finished, with ceiling work advancing and gate line preparation underway.
Sydney Metro’s Next Milestones and Testing Phase
The project’s next stage introduces a 90-metre pedestrian plaza linking north and south Bankstown. This area will feature shops, restaurants, and tree-lined spaces to create a vibrant public hub.
Meanwhile, crews are energising essential systems across all 10 southwest stations to support commissioning of PA and CCTV subsystems. Train testing continues with the critical “kinematic envelope test,” ensuring safe clearance between trains and platforms.
To date, over 700 kilometres of test runs have been completed at controlled speeds ranging from 5 to 25 kilometres per hour. Soon, focus will shift to advanced smart signaling that enables fully driverless metro operations.
When the final section of the M1 Line opens next year, Sydney will gain a 66-kilometre metro network, delivering faster and more dependable journeys for commuters in the city’s southwest.
