Sydney Metro Ridership Soars Beyond Forecasts in 2025
19.03.2025
Sydney’s Gadigal metro station near Town Hall boosts Sydney Metro Ridership significantly. Morning peak traffic hit 9,700 riders in February, up from 8,100. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

This figure outpaced the 2024 forecast, which predicted only 7,500 daily journeys. Sydneysiders clearly favor metro trains, increasing passenger numbers across the network noticeably.

Across the harbour, North Sydney’s Victoria Cross station welcomed 11,400 morning peak passengers. This reflected a fifteen percent jump from November’s 9,900, yet missed 14,400 expected.
Meanwhile, Martin Place emerged as the busiest hub, handling 17,700 metro journeys daily. Numbers rose from 15,100 in November, topping the projected 15,600 trips.
Central station followed closely, accommodating 14,300 metro passengers each morning peak period. Although up from 12,500, it fell short of the ambitious 19,100 forecast.
Sydney Metro defines morning peak hours as spanning from 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. daily. Officials stay confident, expecting passenger growth throughout 2025 and beyond.
Agency leaders highlighted that 2024 forecasts assume patronage stabilizes after initial increases. They foresee a boost with the upcoming Bankstown extension enhancing connectivity.
Sydney Metro Ridership Lags at Some Stations
Some stations struggle to hit their projected passenger numbers consistently. Crows Nest and Waterloo reported lower figures despite recent gains.
Crows Nest saw 6,200 morning peak riders in February, up from 5,200 previously. Yet, this remained well below the 10,100 target set for 2024.
Waterloo station recorded 3,800 passengers, a slight rise from November’s 3,200 total. Still, it missed the forecast of 5,200, showing slower growth trends.
Barangaroo station attracted 4,500 morning peak passengers, up from 4,000 last year. However, it fell short of the projected 5,200 riders expected daily.
Sydney Metro Ridership Set to Climb Higher
Overall metro usage has stabilized since September, following the Chatswood-Sydenham extension. Experts predict a significant rise once the Bankstown line opens in 2026.
This extension will restore train access for Inner West and Western Suburbs residents. It replaces slower rail replacement buses, offering faster metro services.
Sydney Metro’s popularity continues to grow, cutting travel times for Hills residents noticeably. Intercity travelers now switch at Epping for quicker city center trips.
Passenger data underscores the metro’s success in transforming Sydney’s transport landscape effectively. Analysts expect sustained growth as new stations and lines expand access.
Metro officials told the Sydney Morning Herald that Bankstown’s launch will lift numbers. They project patronage climbing steadily as the network matures over time.
Commuters increasingly rely on metro trains for efficient, rapid transit across Sydney. The system’s expansion signals a strong future for public transport usage.
