Sydney Metro celebrates a record-breaking first anniversary
23.08.2025
Sydney Metro celebrates one year of operations, recording over 66.8 million journeys as it reshapes commuting, reduces road congestion, and drives a new era of urban mobility in Sydney. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Sydney Metro drives a new era of transport
Sydney Metro achieved 66.8 million journeys in its first year, linking Sydney’s northwest with Sydenham through the city center. This milestone highlights how the network transformed commuting across the region.

Public transport usage surged by 17.8 million additional trips between August 2024 and July 2025 compared with the previous year. Commuters quickly embraced the reliable service, so ridership growth exceeded early forecasts.
Sydney Metro delivers reliability and efficiency
The M1 Northwest & Bankstown Line maintains a 99.4% on-time performance rate, with 210,000 trips taken daily. Of those, 120,000 trips run beneath Sydney Harbour, easing pressure on the Harbour Bridge and surrounding roads.
The new tunnels and stations at Crows Nest, Victoria Cross, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Gadigal, and Waterloo have modernized city connectivity. Upgraded platforms at Central and Sydenham now manage higher passenger volumes efficiently.
Vehicle traffic also shifted, with 3,200 fewer cars crossing the Harbour Bridge southbound daily compared to the previous year. This change demonstrates how Sydney Metro supports sustainable, faster travel options.
Changing travel patterns
Commuter habits have evolved. At North Sydney Station, weekday trips dropped from 25,400 to 12,200 after Victoria Cross Station opened. St Leonards Station also saw ridership fall from 16,000 to 10,600 because passengers shifted to Crows Nest Station.
Sydney Trains’ T1 and T9 lines reported reduced patronage, down 25% and 10%, as riders switched to the metro. Meanwhile, direct connections from the northwest nearly doubled demand on that section.
