26.09.2024
Swiss company SBB Cargo signed a contract with Stadler at InnoTrans 2024 for the supply of up to 129 four-axle multi-system electric locomotives, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The first 36 units have already been ordered. The locomotives will operate on 15 and 25 kV AC as well as 3 kV DC, replacing the outdated Re420 units produced before 1985.

The electric locomotives feature a power output of 7 MW and a tractive force of up to 350 kN, making them leaders in the European market. They will be distinguished by low energy consumption and the option to be equipped with the Digital Automatic Coupler (DAC).
There is also provision for installing compact last-mile diesel engines with a power of 500 kW or traction battery modules with a capacity of up to 2 MW. The locomotives are adapted for international operations, equipped with the ETCS system and additional national signaling modules.
In the first phase, they will operate in Switzerland, Germany, and Austria, with plans to expand their range of operations further. Deliveries of the locomotives are scheduled for 2027-2035.
This contract will strengthen Stadler’s position in the four-axle locomotive market, currently dominated by Alstom and Siemens.
Given the increasing demands for environmental sustainability and energy efficiency, the new Stadler electric locomotives will become a crucial element in the development of European rail freight transport.
