28.11.2024
Swiss transport company RBS has partnered with Stadler to enhance regional train services. The collaboration focuses on delivering 20 advanced trains to improve capacity and passenger comfort. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Stadler to Build Modern Trains for RBS
The Solothurn-Bern RegioExpress line (RE5) will benefit significantly from these new trains. RBS aims to enhance passenger capacity and comfort with this modern fleet.
The production of these state-of-the-art vehicles will take place in Bussnang, Switzerland. This decision aligns with RBS’s goal of prioritizing local expertise and precision engineering.
The New Rolling Stock for Amsterdam Metro
In December 2023, RBS initiated a tender to replace its oldest fleet and expand capacity. The tender included a proposal for 20 three-car multiple units.
After thorough evaluation, RBS signed the CHF 190 million contract with Stadler in mid-November. The signing occurred in Worblaufen, reflecting strong regional collaboration.
Fabian Schmid, RBS Director, praised Stadler for meeting their standards and planning effectively. He emphasized how this partnership would elevate passenger experiences and regional appeal.
Features of Stadler’s New Trains
Peter Spuhler, Stadler’s Chairman, expressed delight over this continued collaboration. He highlighted Stadler’s ability to deliver customized trains that combine comfort, reliability, and innovative design.
The new trains will feature barrier-free entrances with extendable sliding steps. This improvement addresses accessibility needs and promotes inclusivity for all passengers.
Passenger areas will include multifunctional spaces for pushchairs, bicycles, luggage, and wheelchairs. Generous designs in second-class carriages will enhance convenience.
The seating layout includes 21 seats in first class and 103 seats in second class. Additional folding seats ensure flexible arrangements for different passenger demands.
Modern features such as eco-friendly air conditioning and power sockets at seats will enhance comfort. These additions reflect a commitment to sustainable and passenger-centered solutions.
Production of the first three trains will begin in 2026, with initial operations planned for mid-2027. Following successful testing and driver training, full deployment will occur by 2030.
The triple-formation trains will span 180 meters, increasing peak-time capacity by 50 percent. This upgrade addresses growing demand on the Solothurn-Bern route.
The aging “Seconda” S-Bahn trains currently serve the S8 line but face frequent breakdowns. Despite prior modernizations, their age has led to rising maintenance costs.
The “Seconda” fleet will be replaced by “NExT” trains, currently used on the Solothurn-Bern line. This transition will improve reliability and efficiency across the network.
Suggestions from passengers influenced the design of the new multiple-unit trains. These inputs ensure the vehicles align with public needs and expectations.
The new trains represent a forward-looking approach to public transport in the region. RBS aims to make journeys smoother, more comfortable, and environmentally friendly.
This investment marks a significant milestone in improving regional connectivity. Enhanced features and modern technologies set a new benchmark for Swiss rail travel.
