Stadler Unveils New Hydrogen Rail Bus RS ZERO: An Eco-Friendly Alternative to Diesel Trains
31.08.2024
The Swiss company Stadler has introduced a new prototype of the hydrogen rail bus RS ZERO at a special presentation in Berlin, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

This single-car vehicle, designed to replace diesel trains on non-electrified and low-traffic railway lines in Europe, features a low axle load of less than 18 tons.
The next step after the presentation will be the participation of the new train at the international exhibition InnoTrans 2024, where it is expected to attract the attention of both industry experts and the general public.
RS ZERO is a new model in the RS1 rail bus lineup produced by Stadler.
Between 1996 and 2013, the company delivered around 500 of these trains to Germany and the Czech Republic, confirming their demand and success in the market.
The new model will be available in two configurations: single and double-car, with a capacity ranging from 70 to 150 passengers. Customers can choose between two types of traction—hydrogen and contact-battery—allowing the vehicle to adapt to different operating conditions and infrastructure.
Among the distinctive features of the RS ZERO is the use of environmentally friendly materials in the interior.
The manufacturer has paid particular attention to sustainability: the side panels of the body are made from recycled plastic bottles, emphasizing Stadler’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection. This approach reflects the company’s drive towards innovation in environmentally friendly transport.
Moreover, Stadler is actively expanding its portfolio in the field of hybrid and hydrogen trains. The company already has several successful projects in this direction.
These include hybrid models with battery traction, such as the FLIRT Akku and FLIRT Trimodal, as well as the hydrogen train FLIRT H2. This variety of models demonstrates the company’s ability to adapt to modern market demands and offer solutions that meet various customer needs.
The RS ZERO prototype represents a significant step forward in innovative rail transport.
With its characteristics and environmental focus, it has every chance of becoming a popular choice for many European railway operators.
Stadler continues to implement the latest technologies, offering transport solutions that meet high standards of safety, comfort, and environmental responsibility.
