Stadler Unveils New EURO DuFour Platform for Locomotives

EURO DuFour will serve as the new locomotive base for the DACH rail network and Swiss operator SBB Cargo, offering up to 7 MW of power with support for multiple power supply systems. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

At Transport Logistic 2025 in Munich, Stadler presented its cutting-edge EURO DuFour platform. The new four-axle base is designed for hybrid, diesel-electric, and standard electric locomotives.

Locomotives built on this platform will operate on both AC (15/25 kV) and DC (1.5/3 kV) networks. The electric models will generate up to 7 MW of power and deliver 350 kN of tractive effort.
EURO DuFour: Hybrid and Diesel Solutions for European Rail Operators
Hybrid models will combine power from overhead lines and batteries, with battery modules providing up to 2 MW. Diesel-electric versions will feature engines producing up to 1 MW, allowing operation on non-electrified routes.
The base locomotive will weigh around 80 tons, increasing to 90 tons with an onboard battery module. All versions will feature hybrid or digital automatic couplers, streamlining integration into existing rail systems.
EURO DuFour to Replace Aging Re420 Locomotives in Switzerland
Swiss freight operator SBB Cargo has ordered up to 129 EURO DuFour-based locomotives for delivery between 2027 and 2035, with 36 units confirmed in the firm order.
The new rolling stock will replace outdated Re420 models and support more efficient freight operations. Designed for use across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, the platform targets the DACH region.
With its broad compatibility and energy-efficient design, EURO DuFour marks a technological leap in mainline rail traction.
