These new trains will serve the UTA TRAX network in Salt Lake City and its surroundings, significantly improving transportation quality. The contract is valued at $129 million, and it will be partially funded by a grant from the Federal Transit Administration, which provided crucial financial support for the project.

Citylink tram-trains to boost Salt Lake City’s transportation network

The first batch of 20 Citylink tram-trains is expected to enter service by 2028, meeting the project’s deadline. Stadler will manufacture the rolling stock at its Salt Lake City plant, which opened in 2016. This facility will play a key role in ensuring timely delivery and maintenance of the trains. An important part of the agreement includes Stadler’s commitment to maintaining the tram-trains for 10 years, ensuring long-term operation and passenger safety.

This contract marks Stadler’s first major light rail project in North America, opening new opportunities for growth in this market. Citylink tram-trains will provide 14% more passenger capacity than the currently operated SD100/160 models, increasing transport efficiency. The maximum speed of the new trains will be 110 km/h, which will make trips faster and more comfortable, especially during peak travel times.

The Salt Lake City project is not Stadler’s first major contract. In January 2022, the company signed a deal to deliver 504 Citylink tram-trains for six cities in Austria and Germany. This contract, valued at $4.56 billion, also includes the maintenance of the tram-trains for 32 years, highlighting the company’s long-term approach to its commitments. As part of this project, 246 tram-trains will be delivered by 2034, serving cities like Linz, Salzburg in Austria, and Chemnitz, Karlsruhe, Reutlingen, and Saarbrücken in Germany.

Future of Citylink tram-trains in North America

Stadler’s partnerships with different regions in Europe and America demonstrate its strong reputation both internationally and locally. This also reflects the growing interest in light rail transit systems, which are becoming an essential part of urban infrastructure. Modern Citylink tram-trains promise to improve passenger transport not only in Europe but also in North America, thanks to their higher capacity and speed.

In conclusion, Stadler Citylink tram-trains will play a crucial role in modernizing Salt Lake City’s urban transport system and enhancing passenger services.
