Stadler introduced the first narrow-gauge battery train in Europe
03.10.2025
Stadler in Milan showcased the first battery-powered narrow-gauge train in Europe built for the Basilicata region providing environmentally sustainable passenger operations without costly infrastructure investments.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Stadler and the regional transport future
It secured an order for the supply of seven trains for the altamura–matera route. Production has been scheduled at the Swiss facility of Bussnang. It will complete delivery by the end of 2026.

As reported by Maurizio Oberti, the Italian Sales Director of Stadler, the project was transformed into the first European narrow-gauge networks’ solution run fully on batteries. The batteries sit above the motor bogie for best utilization of space as well as enhancing reliability.
It has a 950 mm gauge for which innovation was especially crucial for the operator Ferrovie Appulo Lucane (FAL). Certification tests at an ANSFISA standard will precede the commissioning of the new ones.
Stadler decreases costs and improves sustainability
Diesel-reduced battery trains decrease reliance on diesel traction as well as emissions. Since some tracks in Basilicata lack electrification, the trains avoid the use of costly catenary infrastructure.
The new fleet also has an economical advantage. Reduced energy consumption as well as simplified maintenance will help reduce the operating costs but provide stability in service. Hence, the client awaits long-term value as well as higher regional transport quality.
Stadler has already established itself as a leader in battery and hydrogen rail technologies. But it’s the first time for this kind of solution for the narrow-gauge network in Europe, but it will open the way for larger use in the rest of countries.
News on railway transport, industry, and railway technologies from Railway Supply that you might have missed:
What is Stadler and why is the new train different?
Stadler is the Swiss railway manufacturer. It was the first tight-fitting battery-powered train the company has supplied without overhead lines.
Stadler battery trains when will they run in italy?
Seven sets will be handed over by the end of 2026 and will enter Into service on the Altamura–Matera route after certification trials.
Can the Stadler phenomenon spread among other European regions?
Yes, as battery technology supports sustainable operation on non-electrified lines by saving on investments as well as emissions.
