Stadler has begun delivering narrow-gauge locomotives to Taiwan, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply.

Stadler Commences Delivery of Narrow-Gauge Locomotives

The first two six-axle locomotives of the SALi series were unveiled to the public at the Changhua station.

After completing acceptance tests by the end of this year, the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) plans to put them into operation at a freight and emergency-rescue depot.

The locomotives are designed based on the Eurodual family. The main feature of their design is the presence of two driver’s cabs with soundproofing and thermal insulation for protection against extreme temperatures.

These locomotives are intended for hauling freight trains weighing up to 2,000 tons on 1067 mm gauge lines. They have a maximum speed of 120 km/h and a starting tractive effort of 430 kN. They are equipped with a 2 MW four-stroke Cummins diesel engine.

Stadler signed a €165 million contract with TRA for the delivery of 34 locomotives in the autumn of 2019. This marked Stadler’s first order in Taiwan.

The rolling stock is manufactured at the Valencia plant in Spain.
