Stadler has started delivering electric trains to regional operator Ente Autonomo Volturno (EAV), which operates the Circumvesuviana line.

The first train has been handed over, and the company will deliver a total of 56 units. This is part of a €314 million contract secured after Stadler’s successful appeal against Hitachi Rail.

These trains are designed for operation on narrow-gauge tracks, 950 mm wide, making them ideal for the local infrastructure. Each train consists of three cars, has aluminum bodies, and features five doors on each side. The interior is specifically designed to accommodate passengers with limited mobility.

The total length of the train is 41 meters, allowing it to navigate commuter routes with high passenger traffic. Each train has a capacity for 467 passengers, including 90 seats. The maximum speed of the trains is currently 100 km/h, but it is expected to increase to 120 km/h in the future.

EAV plans to introduce the first 10 electric trains by 2025. All 56 trains are expected to be delivered and operational by 2026. This will significantly improve the quality of public transport services in the region.

Stadler’s victory in the dispute with Hitachi Rail for this contract marked an important milestone for the company. In September 2019, Hitachi won the tender to supply rolling stock, but Stadler’s subsequent appeal was successful. The contract was revised in 2021, and the Swiss company secured the order.

The initial contract covered the delivery of 23 trains, with an option to expand the order to 40 units. This option was exercised in 2022, and the order was increased. In July 2023, an additional contract was signed for the delivery of another 60 trains.

The Circumvesuviana line, which stretches 169 kilometers east of Naples, is a key transportation artery in the region. It is fully electrified, making the use of these new electric trains an especially effective solution for improving service quality.
