SSIF Expands Fleet with Stadler Narrow-Gauge Trains for Vigezzina-Centovalli Line: Investments in Sustainable and Innovative Rail Solutions
26.08.2024
The Italian railway operator Società Subalpina di Imprese Ferroviarie (SSIF) has expanded its fleet with an additional order for narrow-gauge trains from Stadler, under a Framework Agreement signed in December 2022, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

This acquisition was made possible by European funding of 35.7 million euros through the modified National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP).

The new contract brings the total number of four-car electric multiple units (EMUs) ordered to four, which will be deployed on the Domodossola (Italy) to Locarno (Switzerland) route, part of the Vigezzina-Centovalli railway line.
The ordered trains, each 64 meters long and equipped with 144 seats, offer flexible configurations.
They can be adapted into two or three-car compositions to meet varying operational demands.
This adaptability ensures that the new fleet aligns with SSIF’s commitment to providing efficient and high-quality service on the cross-border route.
Moreover, the additional order strengthens Stadler’s market position as a leader in narrow-gauge rolling stock in both Italy and Europe.
The renewal of the SSIF fleet aligns with similar efforts by Ferrovie Autolinee Regionali Ticinesi (FART), a Swiss company that co-operates on the Vigezzina-Centovalli line.
For over a century, SSIF and FART have collaborated closely, sharing a commitment to maintaining consistent vehicle construction and operational standards. This longstanding partnership reflects a unified approach to regional rail service, enhancing cross-border connectivity and passenger experience.
Daniele Corti, Managing Director of SSIF, highlighted the benefits of Stadler’s flexibility in accommodating specific customer needs and adhering to stringent regulatory standards. This adaptability, combined with strategic scheduling within the production timeline, allowed SSIF to secure the additional rolling stock under the existing agreement. The achievement marks a significant milestone in SSIF’s broader expansion and technological innovation plan, following the renewal of its ten-year concession in 2021.
Matteo Corti, General Manager of SSIF, expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress, noting the crucial role of Stadler’s professionalism in reaching this important phase. The four new trains will ensure continuity and reliability of operations on the Vigezzina-Centovalli railway, a vital transport service for both local and cross-border passengers and a popular attraction for tourists. These upgrades will enhance service quality and operational consistency, supporting the railway’s reputation as a benchmark for excellence in the region.

The partnership is poised to continue fostering mutual growth and development in the coming years.
Stadler’s focus on sustainable rail solutions is evident in their recent initiatives.
Beyond the new electric trains for SSIF, Stadler is advancing the development of innovative battery and hydrogen-powered narrow-gauge vehicles for other regions in Italy.
These efforts align with the goal of decarbonizing rail transport and promoting environmentally friendly mobility solutions.
