LA Metro A Line extension work has taken another step toward construction, with the Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority awarding a key contract to SSH, the joint venture formed by Skanska USA, Stacy Witbeck Inc. and Herzog Contracting Corp.

LA Metro A Line extension advances through design

As set out in the Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority press release, the construction manager contract covers the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority A Line light-rail extension. The authority’s board approved the award unanimously.

The 2.3-mile Pomona to Claremont extension will connect Pomona with a new station in Claremont. The project is now in the final design phase, with Parsons Transportation Group responsible for the design work — a role also noted in Railway Supply’s earlier coverage of the Pomona–Claremont light rail extension.

SSH to support the pre-construction phase

The contract includes authorization for $6.3 million covering the first 18 months of pre-construction activity. At this stage, SSH is expected to support Parsons Transportation Group with constructability reviews, value engineering, third-party coordination and cost estimating.

When the project design is around 85% complete, SSH will be able to negotiate a separate contract to build the extension. That step is not presented as automatic; it remains a possible next stage within the project route described by the authority.

Construction planned for late 2027

With the construction manager contract in place, the A Line extension remains scheduled for construction to start in late 2027. The construction authority expects the work itself to take about four years.

The Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority is an independent agency established by the California State Legislature in 1998. Its remit is to plan, design and build the L.A. Metro A Line system.
