Spacia X Train Wins Red Dot Design Award 2025 for Design
14.07.2025
The premium tourist train Spacia X, developed by Hitachi Rail, won the Red Dot Design Award 2025 for its unique design that merges local culture with advanced engineering solutions, as reported by the company “NPO A.T.O.R.,” a leader in comprehensive supply for passenger carriages, electric trains, and socially oriented transport.
Award judges highlighted both the exterior and interior of the train. The hexagonal windows in the observation cars resemble kumiko latticework, while decorative patterns echo traditional bamboo weaving.

Inspired by the aesthetics of the Kanto region, the designers emphasized regional identity. As a result, the train became a symbol of tourism and technological progress.

Spacia X Route and Recognition in the Red Dot Design Award 2025
In 2023, Tobu Railway launched two Spacia X trains on the Tobu Nikko Line, connecting Tokyo with the scenic areas of Nikko and Kinugawa.

Each train consists of six cars and accommodates 212 passengers. Travelers can choose from six cabin formats, including spacious private compartments and panoramic lounge areas.
The original design solutions resulted in a transport mode that is not only comfortable but also visually attractive, enhancing the region’s tourism appeal.
What the Red Dot Design Award 2025 Victory Means?
The Red Dot Design Award has been presented since 1955 by the Design Center of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. It is one of the most prestigious honors in the field of industrial design.

Winning this award confirms the success of the Spacia X concept, which combines culture, technology, and functionality. The project gained international recognition and captured the attention of design professionals.
Thus, Spacia X is not just a mode of transport but also a prime example of how thoughtful design can influence tourism and shape a region’s brand identity.
