Sound Transit maintenance facility wins $350M approval

The Sound Transit maintenance facility project moved ahead. Also, the agency’s board approved a $350 million contract for construction of Operations and Maintenance Facility South. Meanwhile, the contract covers a 70-acre facility for light rail equipment. In addition, that facility is to be built in Federal Way, Wash. Still, the facility is expected to be completed in 2032.

Sound Transit maintenance facility contract details
Hoffman Construction Co. of Washington will build the facility under a design-build contract. At the same time, the contractor is selected early in the project. Also, it works with the owner on costs and scheduling as the project develops.

In a press release, Sound Transit Deputy CEO and Chief Capital Delivery Officer Terri Mestas said, “Advancing this project through progressive design-build is another example of how Sound Transit is responding to the Board’s directive to leverage best practices from our peers and industry to deliver cost-effective projects on schedule,” and added, “This delivery method will help us better collaborate with our industry partners to manage risks, control costs and streamline decision-making — continuing our efforts to make Sound Transit an owner of choice in the region.”
Operations and Maintenance Facility South in Federal Way
Separately, the contract approved on Thursday, March 26, covers final design, site preparation, roadway improvements, material procurement, and construction of staging and support facilities. Still, further board action will be required. Also, that action will determine the full project budget and address completion costs. Meanwhile, the completed facility is expected to employ more than 600 people.
