Stadler Signalling AG signed an agreement with Swiss operator Sihltal Zürich Uetliberg Bahn (SZU), which involves upgrading the signaling system on the company’s railway lines by 2034. This project aims to enhance safety and efficiency for train operations in the region.

Rental of space at railway stations: opportunities for business development

The project’s total cost is 34 million Swiss francs ($40 million). Stadler will supply new signaling posts and train control systems, boosting both safety and schedule accuracy. The company will also perform testing to ensure reliable system performance.

Key benefits of upgrading the signaling system on SZU railway lines

The 10-year contract is designed to increase train frequency on SZU’s railway network. The new system will reduce the peak hour train interval to 7.5 minutes, improving capacity and service for passengers.

Signaling system and new trains: a modern approach to SZU’s infrastructure

In September, SZU ordered 17 single-deck high-speed FLIRT electric trains from Stadler. The contract is valued at 160 million Swiss francs ($190 million) and includes an option to purchase 10 more units. These new trains will replace the double-deck Re 450 trains currently used on the Sihltalbahn S4 route.

The new trains, scheduled for deployment in 2028, will offer passengers greater comfort and modern technology. The signaling system upgrade and new trains will significantly enhance SZU’s service quality and train frequency.

These projects are part of a larger strategy to modernize Switzerland’s railways, ensuring safer and more efficient transportation services.
