Siemens Mobility Showcases Innovative Battery-Powered Trains in Düsseldorf
22.07.2025
Siemens Mobility introduced advanced Mireo Smart Plus B trains in Germany, combining battery and catenary power to modernize Düsseldorf’s RE 47 route and replace outdated diesel units for cleaner, more sustainable transport. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Siemens Mobility Brings Battery-Hybrid Innovation to Düsseldorf
The company presented its Mireo Smart Plus B trains at the Wegberg-Wildenrath test center. These units will run on the 50-kilometer RE 47 route between Düsseldorf and Remscheid-Lennep in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The first three trains will launch in summer 2026 under a December 2024 leasing agreement. Smart Train Lease, a Siemens subsidiary, will supply the fleet to Regiobahn Fahrbetriebsgesellschaft without requiring costly infrastructure changes.

Siemens Mobility Ensures Efficiency and Maintenance Reliability
Each train can reach 140 km/h and travel 120 kilometers on battery power. The design includes silicon carbide-based traction converters, reducing energy use and improving performance for long-term efficiency.
Siemens will maintain the fleet at its Dortmund service center. The Railigent X digital platform will monitor conditions and schedule predictive maintenance, ensuring nearly 100% availability and improving passenger service quality.
This rollout marks a significant step toward eco-friendly rail transport in Germany. And because strict environmental regulations demand cleaner solutions, Siemens strengthens its leadership in sustainable mobility, paving the way for future green technologies in Europe.
