Siemens Mobility leads Egypt’s transportation sector modernization

Siemens Mobility made a significant breakthrough in Egypt’s rail project overhaul with its participation in TransMEA 2025. Siemens rolled out its Velaro high-speed train designed to function in desert climate conditions with a top speed of 250kmh.

The event was attended by Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Transport Minister Kamel el-Wazir, CEO of Siemens AG Roland Busch, and CEO of Siemens Mobility Michael Peter. They said that the project meets Egypt’s ambition to create one of the largest global high-speed rail networks.

The Velaro, designed to cater to Egypt’s climate conditions, offers seating for 489 passengers. It was launched along with the Desiro High Capacity (HC) regional train, which successfully undertook its first test run near the 6th of October Depot.

Desiro HC will run on the Green Line route, which spans 660km between Cairo, Sokhna, Alexandria, and Marsa Matrouh. The combination of these trains will represent progression in Egypt’s ‘Suez Canal on Rails’ project.

Siemens Mobility enhances its focus on sustainability & digitalization

“The launches of Velaro and Desiro HC trains are landmarks for our modernization program,” Minister El-Wazir said. “They cut traveling times between destinations. They promote economic growth because these trains are both efficient and environment-friendly,”

Tarek Aly, CEO of Siemens Mobility Egypt, said that Siemens used ‘digital twins’ that are provided by Altair to engineer its Velaro trains. A ‘digital twin’ encompasses technology that enhances cooling systems, filtering systems, or aerodynamics.

Under its $8.5 billion contract with Arab Contractors and Orascom Construction, Siemens Mobility will supply 41 Velaro high-speed trainsets, 94 Desiro HC electric multiple units, and 41 Vectron electric locomotives. The maintenance regime over 15 years will ensure its reliability.

They are equipped with 849 seats, climate control, access for passengers with wheelchairs, and ETCS Level 2 signaling. With operating speeds of 160km/h, these trains will improve everyday mobility for millions of people and reduce emissions of CO₂ in the country.

With its completion, Egypt’s high-speed rail network of 2,000 kilometers will serve 90% of its population. It will cut journey times by half. The project serves as a model for mobility solutions in the Middle East.
