The station serves approximately 171,000 passengers daily, making it a vital transportation center. To carry out the installation, the station was closed for 20 hours, involving 550 specialists and 10 service trains.

Siemens Mobility Upgrades Geneva Cornavin Station with Simis W Technology

The project began in 2019 and involved extensive modernization efforts. Siemens implemented Simis W microprocessor interlocking, Iltis automated workstations, and ETCS Level 1 equipment.

During the project, 230 kilometers of cables were laid, and 1,500 infrastructure devices were upgraded. These devices were integrated with 88 cabinets containing state-of-the-art microprocessor equipment.

Replacing the outdated SpDrS relay system, in operation since 1986, significantly improved safety and operational efficiency.

Siemens Mobility Drives Modernization of Switzerland’s Third-Largest Railway Station

Geneva Cornavin station is unique in its ability to dynamically switch contact network voltage. This feature allows seamless accommodation of Swiss and French trains, including high-speed and regional services.

These innovations optimize traffic flow, increase capacity, and improve the passenger experience. They also set the stage for long-term development plans for the station.

Preparing Geneva Cornavin for Future Reconstruction with Siemens Mobility’s Solutions

The installation of Simis W is the first step in a comprehensive redevelopment project. By 2038, the station will include a new underground through-station, enhancing regional connectivity and travel efficiency.

Siemens Mobility’s advanced solutions ensure reliability and align with modern infrastructure standards. Geneva Cornavin remains a key transportation hub, advancing European rail transport.
