Siemens Mobility investment in Bavaria

Luhe-Wildenau site will span 20,000 sq m and will manufacture regional train and locomotive battery systems as well as systems for external customers. Construction is complete in spring 2027 and series production is initiated in October.

Officials clarified that this plant proves Siemens’ bet on Germany rail competitiveness. They pointed out that the move is favorable to sustainable mobility, generates highly skilled employment opportunities, and drives next-generation transport tech for passenger as well as freight sectors.

Karl Blaim, CFO of Siemens Mobility, emphasized that Siemens Mobility is providing a direct input into the mobility transition. He further stated that such an investment is a strong indication of Germany’s future as a business location.

Siemens Mobility battery systems and technology

Siemens has pioneered battery-electric trains since 2017 and will expand into freight locomotives requiring stronger durability. Regional trains need 500 kWh storage, while locomotives demand up to 2,000 kWh.

The new facility will manufacture complete systems consisting of a Battery Management System (BMS) designed by Munich-based Stercom. Suppliers of cells will include companies such as Toshiba, while its factory will have superior welding and automation to make it even more efficient.

Pre-assembly is already underway in Luhe-Wildenau, but this extension will allow three-shift operation full-volume production of 120 MWh per year. Cooperations with Dirnberger Real Estate GmbH and DIMONDA Projektbau GmbH assure development as well as long-term site operation.

Siemens solidifies its leadership in battery-electric rail solutions through this facility. Since sustainability transport is increasingly in demand, Germany and Europe will be aided in achieving decarbonization goals through this plant.
