Siemens Mobility has struck an agreement with Voestalpine, an Austrian steel producer, to include more Greentec Steel Edition low-carbon steel in the production of rail transport means and related components.

This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The company plans to increase the use of this material to about 20% of the total steel that it consumes.

The pact is the result of cooperation that began in 2022 within the ‘Green Steel for Bogies’ project at Siemens Mobility’s plant in Graz, Austria.

It was there that the application of Greentec Steel Edition began in the production of bogie frames to evaluate its strength and reliability.

Greentec Steel Edition cuts CO₂ emissions by 70% due to Voestalpine’s use of lower amounts of coking coal during production and the subsequent use of hydrogen reducers.

Siemens Mobility chose this solution due to its property of combining structural function with ecological efficiency without affecting durability.

Siemens Mobility Increases Use of Sustainable Materials

The pilot project carried out in Graz has shown that large-scale production with Greentec steel is possible. Based on that success, Siemens Mobility has further extended the use of low-carbon steel to bogies, locomotives, and passenger coaches to reduce CO₂ emissions across the entire production process.

The company also has plans to launch Greentec Steel Edition in other production units in Germany and the Czech Republic. This facilitates standardization of sustainable processes within the supply chain and also helps to build consumers’ trust in ethical production.

Siemens Mobility highlights that the process of decarbonization has to be addressed through collaboration across the industry as a whole, and the use of “green” steel is one step in the right direction to lower greenhouse gases in rail engineering.
