New generation sleepers made from composite materials
20.10.2023
Network Rail and Lankhorst Rail are jointly working on next-generation sleepers made from KLP composite materials, this is reported by the railway transport news portal, Railway Supply.
These sleepers, reinforced with steel rods, promise significant advantages.
Research will focus on their resistance to bending, flexibility, and heat resistance, especially in conditions of extreme heat.

KLP sleepers have already been successfully used in a railway tunnel under the River Nieuwe Maas in Rotterdam.
Furthermore, they are expected to simplify the laying of railway tracks, as the rail fastening system can be pressed directly into the sleeper.
This project opens new prospects for railway systems and may have a positive impact on infrastructure in multiple countries.
It’s important to note that Lankhorst Rail is ready to offer a variety of specialty sleepers with improved characteristics such as high resistance to bending and low thermal expansion.
The use of KLP sleepers began in the Netherlands in 2006 and has continued to expand, with approval from infrastructure operators in Germany, New Zealand, Australia, the UK, and Malaysia.
This reflects the widespread recognition and promise of this innovation in the global railway industry.
Research and development conducted by Network Rail and Lankhorst Rail could contribute to the improvement of railway systems, enhancing their reliability and durability, and improving conditions for passengers and freight transportation.
