Senator Maria Cantwell praised the appointments, emphasizing their importance for implementing the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. She highlighted Amtrak’s plans to purchase modern railcars, upgrade stations, and enhance accessibility.
David Capozzi, Elaine Clegg, Ronald Batory, and Lanhee Chen bring diverse expertise to Amtrak’s leadership. Capozzi, a retired executive, was first nominated in 2022 and renominated in January 2023.
New Focus on Growth and Efficiency at Amtrak’s Board
President Biden nominated Batory and Clegg in May 2024, focusing on transportation reform. Batory previously led the Federal Railroad Administration, and Clegg heads Valley Regional Transit in Idaho.
Lanhee Chen, nominated in September, directs Public Policy Studies at Stanford University. His policy background complements Amtrak’s goals for strategic planning and financial efficiency.
Earlier confirmations in 2024 included Anthony Coscia, Christopher Koos, and Joel Szabat. Their appointments restored Amtrak’s leadership, addressing delays that left vacancies for nearly nine years.
The board will now oversee funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to modernize Amtrak services. Key projects include upgrading tracks, purchasing trains, and enhancing customer service operations.
With strong leadership at Amtrak’s board, modernization efforts are expected to accelerate nationwide. Rail advocates and policymakers anticipate growth in passenger demand due to service improvements.
Amtrak aims to deliver better performance and reliability while enhancing accessibility across its network. Industry experts believe these upgrades will boost ridership, making train travel more competitive.
Amtrak passengers should benefit from faster service, modern stations, and improved infrastructure. Future developments will focus on increasing efficiency, reducing delays, and expanding travel options.
