Schaeffler Unveils Generator for Ermewa Freight Wagons
04.06.2025
At the Transport Logistic exhibition in Munich, Schaeffler unveiled an axle-mounted generator for freight wagons, with its first application in a pallet wagon operated by leasing company Ermewa. The device enables autonomous control of the tarp system and telematics. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The generator is integrated into the axle bearing housing. A permanent magnet rotor is mounted on the axle, while a wear-resistant stator is embedded in the housing cover. The system generates power while the train is in motion.

The onboard battery, produced by Slovenian company Realtronik, is mounted on the bogie. It powers a folding tarp body developed by France’s Innovaction Technologies. A single charge is sufficient for up to 50 full open/close cycles.
Schaeffler offers two generator versions: a basic one producing up to 50 W, and a more powerful version starting at 100 W. The latter can power not only the tarp system but also automated doors.
Ermewa plans to use the device not only for mechanical functions but also to power telematic sensors. This will enable real-time monitoring of wagon condition and cargo environment.
Schaeffler Expands Autonomous Solutions for Wagons
The new Schaeffler solution increases the energy independence of freight rolling stock. The generator reduces reliance on external power sources and simplifies wagon operation on less developed infrastructure.
By integrating technologies from multiple manufacturers, the project delivers a wagon capable of partial autonomous functionality. This is especially valuable for high-frequency logistics operations.
Schaeffler Generator Supports Telematics Advancement
Freight operators will reduce installation costs for external power supplies. At the same time, cargo tracking will improve thanks to telematics powered by the onboard energy system.
As a result, the new Schaeffler equipment may become a new standard in innovative logistics solutions, combining energy efficiency, practicality, and cutting-edge technology.
