River Runner train service halted between Kansas City and St. Louis

At approximately 1:30 a.m. October 17, 2025, the Sheriff’s Office of Johnson County took a report that a freight train derailed along NE 175th and U.S. Highway 50 north of Montserrat, Missouri. Roughly twenty freight cars went off the rails west of the Whiteman Air Force Base.

Investigators confirmed passing crossings at NE 801 Road and the 740 block of NE 50 Highway were shut down due to safety. Traffic on the rail vessel on both sides was halted to allow emergency crews to survey the scene.

Amtrak has confirmed that the St. Louis to Kansas City River Runner_train service has been put on hold due to the derailment. Alternately, passengers received transportation_or refunds.

River Runner train route affected by cleanup and investigation

Trains and heavy machinery on October 17, 2025, rolled out to remove cars that were derailed and to fix the ruptured track. The Federal Railroad Administration and the Missouri Department of Transportation opened an investigation.

No injuries occurred. Road officials urged drivers to steer around the damaged section until the cleanups could be finished. They did not announce the reopening time.

River Runner Train usually runs between St. Louis and Kansas City on stops at Warrensburg, Jefferson City, Hermann, and other cities.
