“Ukrzaliznytsia,” in collaboration with Spanish companies, is preparing to launch an innovative project to create wagons equipped with adjustable wheelsets, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Coaches with Adjustable Wheelsets and Gauge Change Devices

This project may start at the end of 2025.

The Chairman of “Ukrzaliznytsia,”Yevhen Lyashchenko, announced that an agreement has been reached to establish a joint consortium with Spanish partners who have experience in automatic gauge-changing technologies.

Thanks to this cooperation, the companies will be able to apply for a grant from the Spanish government to implement the pilot project in Ukraine.

The aim of the project is to manufacture wagons with adjustable wheelsets and to install an automated gauge-changing system designed to operate on 1520 mm and 1435 mm tracks.

Such a system will allow trains to adapt to different gauge standards, significantly simplifying and speeding up rail transport between countries with different gauges.

Yevhen Lyashchenko noted that the project has a complex certification process, which may delay its start until the end of 2025.

However, work is already underway on the technical details to prepare the first phase by the end of 2024.

The final cost of the project is expected to be several million euros.

It was previously reported that Ukrainian and Spanish railway workers are actively cooperating to adapt trains to different gauges.

The implementation of this project will be an important step in the development of international rail transport and the strengthening of economic ties between countries.

Adjustable wheelsets will significantly reduce the time and cost of transporting goods and passengers across borders, which is a crucial factor in the context of growing globalization and integration of transport systems.

Thus, the project by “Ukrzaliznytsia” and Spanish companies to create wagons with adjustable wheelsets is a promising and innovative solution for the development of Ukraine’s railway infrastructure.

Successful implementation of this project will improve logistics, increase transport efficiency, and strengthen Ukraine’s position in the international railway transport market.
