Both countries’ railway leadership plans to further increase this volume to 1 million tons next year, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Railway transportation between Turkey and Iran

The initiative includes allowing up to 200 wagons per day through the Razi border crossing in the Iranian West Azerbaijan region.

Turkey commits to modernizing railway infrastructure and reconstructing ferry docks, facilitating wagon transport across Lake Van for a distance of 90.6 km.

The restoration of passenger transport between Tehran and the city of Van became possible in 2019 after a four-year hiatus.

Discussions also covered plans to increase freight transit volumes through Turkey, including the China-Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Turkey route, with subsequent routes to European countries.

The growth in transit freight is attributed to agreements between Iran’s railways and their partners from the mentioned countries.

It’s important to note that Iran’s transit freight volume increased significantly to 9.4 million tons in the first 8 months of 2023, marking a 28.2% growth compared to the same period last year (from March 22 to November 21).

This dynamic indicates active development in railway connections between Turkey and Iran.
