Railway Suicide Prevention System
29.10.2023
Innovate UK’s funding has supported the Suicide Avoidance via Intelligent Video Examination project, a collaborative effort involving Purple Transform, Govia Thameslink Railway, and Lancaster University, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
This initiative harnesses the power of AI with three distinct technologies.
The first employs smart cameras strategically positioned at railway stations and along tracks. These cameras are trained to detect potential signs of suicide attempts.

The second method leverages deep learning models trained on existing footage to predict and generate risk scores based on specific behaviors.
Lastly, the third approach ensures that railway staff and relevant professionals are alerted when an incident is likely to occur. This timely alert system equips them with actionable advice for intervention.
Dr. Mahsa Honary from Lancaster University Management School emphasized the importance of integrating technology for mental health management and user behavioral analysis.
By training the AI system to identify key markers and patterns associated with extremely vulnerable individuals, the project aims to facilitate swift and effective interventions, ultimately saving more lives.
