A new railway link connecting Mongolia and China is currently being constructed

The line will connect the Mongolian border point of Shivee Khuren with the Chinese border point of Ceke. Construction commenced on May 27, and the project is expected to be completed by October 2023. Once finished, this railway will span a distance of 7.1 kilometers and become the second cross-border railway between China and Mongolia. This information was reported by the railway portal Railway Supply, citing the railfreight.

Railway connecting Mongolia and China

Chinese government sources indicate that upon completion, the Shivee Khuren-Ceke cross-border line will facilitate the transportation of bulk goods, particularly coal and copper mines. Currently, this border crossing is operational but lacks a rail link, relying solely on road transport. Chinese officials confirmed the intention to open a railway border crossing in this location as early as 2016. However, it took seven years for the actual construction to commence.

In addition to the ongoing construction of the Shivee Khuren-Ceke railway, plans for two other new border crossing railways are being considered.

The Gashuunsukhait (Mongolia)-Ganqimaodu (China) border crossing, which was established in 2004 and relies on road transport, is also undergoing rail transformation. According to Telenged Baast, the Mongolian rail freight operator from Monlogistic, construction on the Mongolian side of the railway was completed last year, but there are still connectivity issues with the Chinese side that need to be resolved.

Once finished, this rail border crossing has the potential to become a crucial point for coal and mining trade between Mongolia and Russia.

Furthermore, Mongolia inaugurated a new railway line last November that connects Zongbayan to the border city of Khangi, both located in Mongolia. The plan is for this line to connect with the Chinese border city of Mandula, but the link has yet to be finalized and awaits official approval to be recognized as a cross-border line.

Consequently, the last mile of this railway line remains uncertain. Once the two parties reach an agreement and complete the necessary paperwork, a new route could be established, distributing the transportation load between Erenhot and Zamiin-Uud, which currently serves as the only rail border crossing between the two countries.
