Rail supplier news this week brings together updates from Railinc, Alstom and the Railway Interchange event. Railinc Corp. says it is partnering with North Carolina State University on supply chain optimization research using big-data analysis.

Railinc supply chain optimization research with NCSU
In its press release, Railinc said the work will focus on identifying opportunities to shift long-haul freight moves from truck to rail. The stated goals are to reduce highway congestion, lower shipping costs and cut emissions. Railinc, a Association of American Railroads subsidiary, provides rail data and information technology services intended to improve efficiency across the railroad industry.

Alstom Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) Melbourne contract
In Australia, Alstom said it has been awarded a contract valued at 4.9 billion euros by the Australian Victorian Government, as part of a joint venture, to complete the east section of Melbourne’s Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) subway project. Alstom’s share of the contract is 1 billion euros. The joint venture brings together Alstom with John Holland Group, KBR, WSP and RATP Dev. Alstom described the SRL as Australia’s largest rail and housing infrastructure project; at full build-out, it is planned to comprise 56 miles of subway tracks through Melbourne’s middle suburbs.
2026 Railway Interchange Omaha keynote by Jim Vena
Railway Interchange planners said Union Pacific Railroad CEO Jim Vena will deliver the keynote address at the 2026 Railway Interchange, set for June 2–4 in Omaha, Nebraska. Vena served as Union Pacific’s chief operating officer from 2019–2020 and later as senior adviser to the chairman in 2021.
He returned to the Class I railroad in August 2023 as CEO and is now overseeing the proposed merger of Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern Railway, as Railway Supply notes in its coverage of the discussions.
