Rail Baltica construction progresses in Lithuania
08.10.2025
A new section of the Rail Baltica project has opened in Lithuania, with the purpose of linking the Baltic States with the European wide-gauge railway network. An 8.8-km section is currently under construction between Sveicarija and Zeimiai and is due for completion by the end of 2025.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Rail Baltica strengthens Lithuania’s transport future
Infrastructure manager LTG Infra provides the works with the indispensable items: 86,200 tonnes of ballast, 29,500 reinforce concrete sleepers, and 42 kilometres of rails. Those quantities prove Lithuania’s clear intention to connect its transport system with the general European network.

It entered into a €13.9 million agreement with the Leonhard Weiss International-led consortiuim, which is also Estonian-based. Track installation has began and the contractors assured that timelines would be kept as agreed. After that phase, engineers will carry out electrification in order to facilitate efficiency as well as lower the cost of running the project.
Rail Baltica electrification boosts network efficiency
In September 2025, LTG Infra inked the giant deal with the Spanish consortium COBELEC Rail Baltica on the design and construction of the electrification subsystem of the whole high-speed line. It is the €1.77 billion-worth deal without VAT that will bring the newest high-tech innovation that will satisfy European safety and energy efficiency criteria.
At the same time, extensive works go on along the Kaunas–Panevėžys ortort. The base has already been constructed along a stretch of 77 km, and by the year-end, the construction will increase to 114 km. An additional new bridge across the Neris River will raised the efficiency in the transport of cargos further.
Rail Baltica generates new employment, boosts Lithuania’s economy, and consolidates the country’s status in the EU transportation system. It boosts the competitiveness of the region as well as favorably approves sustainability in transportation and transition towards green logistics.
