Queensland Rail strengthens regional transport links

The company plans to replace more than 100,000 sleepers by mid-2026. The 610-kilometre route plays a key role in Queensland’s agricultural supply chain, carrying hundreds of grain trains each year between rural producers and major markets. Crews began the renewal effort in Thallon and continue moving north toward Warwick and Toowoomba. About 35 Queensland Rail employees are replacing over 1,000 sleepers daily using 12 specialized track machines. The rapid progress shows the company’s commitment to maintaining service continuity even during the peak grain season.

Scott Cornish, Head of Regional at Queensland Rail, said the project demonstrates the operator’s long-term strategy for rural connectivity. “Our regional railways are vital for freight, heritage, and tourism,” he noted. “Investing in their renewal keeps Queensland’s communities connected and industries thriving.”

The project also advances sustainability. By installing new sleepers, Queensland Rail reduces maintenance demand, extends track life, and minimizes future disruptions. And as works progress, smoother rides and reduced mechanical wear will translate into lower costs for freight operators.

When completed in mid-2026, the South West line will handle higher volumes with better reliability. The investment not only strengthens Queensland’s logistics capacity but also secures the future of rural supply chains linking farmers to domestic and global markets.
