PWI NSW rail awards honour Life Members and Honorary Fellows
22.12.2025
Each year, PWI NSW rail awards are highlighted at the Permanent Way Institution of New South Wales (PWI NSW) gathering of rail professionals. This year’s event again focused on career-long service and leadership that have helped shape outcomes across the industry.

This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
PWI NSW rail awards: Life Membership recipients
As part of the conference program, the Institution awarded PWI Life Membership to five figures from across the sector: Julian Sharp (CPB Contractors), Daniel Collison (BG&E Consulting Engineers), Mark Butler (WSP), Scott Chapman (Australian Rail Track Corporation — ARTC), and Patrick Man (John Holland). Each was recognised for decades of work in rail, pairing technical capability with sustained contribution over many years.

PWI NSW said their influence has extended beyond individual roles or projects. Through leadership, mentoring and knowledge-sharing, these Life Members have supported the next generation of engineers and maintainers, helping strengthen the profession over time.
PWI Life Membership and a focus on continuous improvement
In acknowledging the recipients, the Institution pointed to the values it promotes: professionalism, collaboration and continuous improvement. The contributions took different forms — from practical innovation and complex program leadership to support for safety and standards — but the common thread was a durable commitment to the industry.
PWI Honorary Fellowships recognise sector leadership
The conference also presented PWI Honorary Fellowships to Howard Collins OBE of Transport for New South Wales and Matt Longlands of Sydney Trains. Their leadership and dedication were recognised as ongoing influences across the wider transport sector, reflecting a consistent drive to enhance rail in New South Wales through integrity, vision and service.
By highlighting both Life Members and Honorary Fellows, PWI NSW reinforced its approach to rail industry leadership and recognition: celebrating people who lead by example and devote their careers to improving how rail networks are built, operated and maintained.
Looking ahead, PWI NSW said this year’s awardees are a reminder that rail progress depends on people who innovate, teach and lead with purpose. A detailed overview of the 51st PWI Conference is expected in early February, with more to come, as reported by Rail Express.
