Pune Metro Line 4 to Transform East–West Travel in Pune
07.12.2025
Pune Metro Line 4 is set to reshape how Pune moves between Kharadi, Hadapsar, Swargate and Khadakwasla. The newly approved elevated corridor under Pune Metro Phase-2 was recently inspected on the ground by MLA Shri Bhimrao Tapkir together with senior Maha-Metro officials.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Pune Metro Line 4 corridor under Pune Metro Phase-2
During the field visit, MLA Shri Bhimrao Tapkir was joined by Maha-Metro Managing Director Shri Shravan Hardikar (IAS) and a senior team of Pune Metro officials. The delegation walked through the newly approved Khadakwasla–Kharadi Metro corridor, checking proposed station locations, the planned alignment and surrounding neighbourhoods.

Particular attention was given to key nodes such as the Khadakwasla Gaothan area and the extended Vanaz–Chandani Chowk stretch. Also present were Maha-Metro Director (Operations) Shri Atul Gadgil, other senior representatives, past and present public leaders and field staff, which underlined how strategically important Pune Metro Phase-2 has become for the city.
The Union Cabinet’s approval for Pune Metro Phase-2 covers both Line 4 (Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla) and Line 4A (Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug). This decision is set out in a press release from the Government of India and has also been covered by Railway-News. Together, the Phase-2 corridors add 31.64 km of fully elevated metro infrastructure with 28 modern stations, designed to keep pace with Pune’s rapid urbanisation.
Key details of the Khadakwasla–Kharadi metro corridor
At the core of this expansion lies the Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla stretch, which defines the main alignment of Pune Metro Line 4. Key parameters are:
- Stretch: Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla
- Length: 25.52 km
- Stations: 22
- Type: Elevated
Once Pune Metro Line 4 is operational, it will form the city’s first seamless, continuous east–west and southwest rapid transit connection. Along this route, the line will tie together:
- Kharadi IT Hub
- Magarpatta and the Hadapsar industrial belt
- Swargate interchange terminal
- Residential zones along Sinhagad Road and in the Khadakwasla area
With Phase-2’s Line 4 and Line 4A in place, Pune’s metro network is expected to cross the 100-km mark, putting the city in the company of a limited number of Indian metros with similarly extensive rapid transit systems.
Benefits for Pune’s busiest roads and growth areas
The new Khadakwasla–Kharadi metro corridor is designed around several high-demand zones and is likely to change daily travel patterns across Pune:
- Direct connectivity across key activity centres: The line will link IT parks, major business districts, educational institutions and densely populated suburbs, reducing the need for long cross-city road journeys.
- Relief on overburdened road arteries: As riders shift to metro services, traffic pressure is expected to ease on critical routes such as Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, Shankar Sheth Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road and the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway.
- Strong alternative to private vehicles: In a context of rising vehicle ownership and limited road capacity, the corridor offers a dependable, fast and more sustainable option than private cars and two-wheelers.
- Drastically lower travel time: East–west and southwest trips that currently consume significant time in traffic should be completed far quicker by metro, making everyday commuting more predictable and comfortable.
The broader role of Pune Metro in supporting greener, more sustainable mobility is also explored in a Railway Supply article on Pune Metro expansion, which places this project within the city’s long-term transport strategy.
Maha-Metro’s role and multimodal integration
Construction and delivery of the elevated corridor have been entrusted to Maha-Metro, already recognised for metro systems in Pune and Nagpur developed to international benchmarks. For Pune Metro Phase-2 Line 4, Maha-Metro’s scope of work includes:
- Building elevated viaducts and station structures
- Installing traction and electrical systems
- Deploying signalling and advanced communication networks
- Carrying out track work and depot development
The project has been conceived with multimodal integration in mind. The Khadakwasla–Kharadi metro corridor will connect with PMPML bus routes, suburban rail services, existing Metro Lines 1 and 2 and future links such as the Saswad–Loni Kalbhor corridors. This setup is meant to make transfers smoother and support the emergence of a single, unified mobility network for the city.
The anticipated impact goes beyond day-to-day operations. Better access to job hubs is expected to support employment patterns, while improved connections along the corridor can lift real estate demand and tourism potential in key zones. At the same time, faster and more affordable public transport options should strengthen social inclusion for residents in more distant neighbourhoods who currently depend on slower and less reliable travel.
Long-term outlook for Pune’s urban mobility
The on-site inspection of Pune Metro Line 4 and the wider Khadakwasla–Kharadi metro corridor is therefore more than a procedural step in project delivery. It reflects a long-term commitment to cleaner, faster and better-connected urban mobility in Pune.
As the Pune Metro Phase-2 corridors advance, the combination of reduced congestion, greener travel choices and robust multimodal integration is set to influence how the city grows and how its residents move for decades to come.
