Project Yellow Submarine fundraiser has been launched by the ACMU Society to start urgent work on its preserved Class 315 unit, No. 315856. The group says the train is based at the Llanelli & Mynydd Mawr Railway, but major water ingress has started to affect its condition.

This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The society warns that if repairs do not begin soon, there is a serious risk of losing the sole surviving Class 315 in preservation. It has set an initial £1000 target to begin emergency weatherproofing, as reported by RailAdvent.

Planned workshop move and first repairs

Under an agreement with the Llanelli & Mynydd Mawr Railway, Driving Motor Standard (DMS) No. 64571 will be shunted into the workshop for a short period in January 2026.

While the leading vehicle is under cover, volunteers plan to tackle some of the water ingress and apply primer and undercoat to stabilise the vehicle’s condition.

Match funding and how to support the appeal

The ACMU Society says the appeal includes match funding, meaning that for every £1 raised, a total of £2 will go towards the project. It credits an anonymous donor for the arrangement, doubling the impact of contributions. Supporters can donate via the JustGiving crowdfunding page.

Hopes for longer-term Class 315 preservation

Commenting on the agreement, C315 Project Lead Lakshman Pathak said: “I am pleased to work with the Llanelli & Mynydd Mawr Railway with our agreement to provide temporary undercover facilities for the leading vehicle of the ACMU Society’s preserved Class 315 unit.

We hope the work undertaken indoors will be fruitful for the vehicle’s longevity in preservation, and set a strong foundation for providing similar treatment to the remaining vehicles throughout 2026.”
