The “FREE Rail” program: LTG, the first in the Baltic countries, has chosen a data exchange system for freight transportation used in the West
20.03.2024
The LTG Group, implementing the integration of the railway sector into the European railway system and the resilience enhancement program FREE Rail, takes another important step by joining the Orfeus system of the International Union of Railways (UIC), which is used in the West, allowing cooperating carriers to transmit CIM consignment note data, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
LTG Cargo, a freight transport company within the group, is the first company in the railway sector in the Baltic countries to choose a Western solution for presenting consignment note data, typically used by carriers of the European standard gauge (1435 mm), and now for freight transportation on broad gauge tracks (1520 mm).
LTG Cargo: a reliable partner in the world of logistics
The CIM consignment note is a standardized form for international rail freight transport, recognized and applied in the European railway system.
“We consistently strive for comprehensive integration with Europe, both in terms of business relationships, infrastructure, and technology. As freight volumes to the West continue to grow, within the LTG group, we are constantly seeking opportunities to adapt solutions used in the West to the broad (1520 mm) railway gauge. The Orfeus solution will enhance integration with the West and improve freight transportation services – consignment notes will be provided automatically, reducing document processing time and the likelihood of human errors. With our choice, we demonstrate that solutions applied in Europe can also work successfully on broad gauge railways,” says Gediminas Šečkus, Director of Business Resilience at LTG.
In March, the LTG Cargo group signed an agreement with the International Union of Railways, which operates worldwide and brings together representatives of railway transport.
The contract signed with the International Union of Railways will allow the company to use the Orfeus system.
Preparatory work has already begun. It is planned that LTG Group companies will start using this system in the last quarter of this year after completing all necessary preparatory work.
The “FREE Rail” program, initiated and implemented by LTG, will enable the creation and implementation of a railway operating model adapted to the Baltic region, based on EU standards, best practices, and harmonized with the specifications of the broad gauge.
LTG Cargo, the LTG Group’s freight transport company, is currently continuing its active integration and expansion efforts in the West.
The company provides freight transport, logistics and freight forwarding, freight loading, locomotive and wagon repair and wagon rental services in Lithuania and abroad.
LTG Cargo has established and manages LTG Cargo Polska in Poland and LTG Cargo Ukraine in Ukraine.
