China Begins Project to Build Its First Intercity Maglev Line
19.11.2024
China has launched the project to build its first intercity maglev line, linking Changsha and Liuyang. The 48.7-kilometer route signifies a major advancement in transportation infrastructure. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Implementation of the Project to Build Its First Intercity Maglev Line
The project has been divided into two phases to manage construction efficiently. The first phase will cover a 39.5-kilometer section connecting Changsha Huanghua International Airport to Jili District.

Sinohydro Engineering Bureau 8, a subsidiary of Power Construction Corporation of China, is leading this phase. The budget for the initial phase is ¥10.4 billion ($1.45 billion), and completion is expected by 2029.
Trains will operate at a maximum speed of 160 km/h, ensuring smooth and efficient medium-distance travel. This new maglev line aims to improve passenger convenience and enhance regional transport accessibility.
Integrating the New Maglev Line with Existing Infrastructure
The new line will integrate seamlessly with an operational maglev line in Changsha, launched in 2016. The existing line spans 18.5 kilometers, linking Changsha South Railway Station to the city’s international airport.
This integration will boost connectivity and contribute to economic development by enhancing regional mobility. While Shanghai’s Transrapid remains the world’s fastest maglev line, the new project emphasizes medium speeds and affordability.
Transrapid, built by a German consortium in 2003, reaches speeds of up to 431 km/h and exemplifies cutting-edge technology. However, the Hunan project prioritizes regional suitability over maximum speed.
China continues to lead the way in transportation innovation, drawing global attention with its rapid adoption of advanced technologies. These developments cement China’s position as a global leader in infrastructure advancement.
