Enhancing Railroad Worker Safety

The European Space Agency is funding the Tended project to enhance the safety of railway workers, this is reported by the railway transport news portal, Railway Supply.
British technology company Tended has partnered with the European Space Agency (ESA) Business Applications in a €1.6 million project aimed at improving the safety of rail transport workers.

ESA is financing 50% of the project, which is a result of collaboration with Siemens Mobility, Story Contracting, RSS Infrastructure, and Morgan Sindall Infrastructure.
Traditional management methods, such as paper processes, diagrams, and magnetic markers, are inefficient and error-prone, significantly compromising safety and work efficiency on railways, says Tended.
Planning concerns instances when a railway section needs technical maintenance, and trains cannot operate on it, so operators hand over control of that section to engineers.
Tended’s product combines geofencing technology, portable devices, and behavior processes to enhance worker safety.
Through Tended’s online panel, organizations are provided with a digital representation of their work environment.
With high-resolution images, site managers can safely navigate people around large and complex work areas with multiple rail lines and hazards.

According to the company, the project can position workers with centimeter-level accuracy. Auditory, visual, and vibrational alerts notify workers if they cross safety zone boundaries.
The aim is to prevent safety-related incidents in railway proximity, ensuring workers are in the right place and avoiding locations that could lead to accidents and fatalities.
Over the next 12 months, Tended will collaborate with Siemens Mobility, Story Contracting, RSS Infrastructure, and Morgan Sindall Infrastructure to develop and test this new technology.
