Operator ViP Verkehrsbetrieb Potsdam GmbH (ViP) says the launch supports more sustainable public transport in Potsdam, the capital of Brandenburg.

The first two Stadler TramLink vehicles from a total order of 13 units entered passenger operation on 17 December, as reported by Railway Pro. “We are delighted to announce the start of passenger service for the new TramLink tram in Potsdam. This modern tram represents a significant step forward in improving urban mobility and will provide residents and visitors with a comfortable, environmentally friendly, and efficient way to get around,” said Bettina Biffi, Commercial Managing Director of ViP.

Potsdam TramLink trams: first units and schedule

ViP had been working toward the rollout for months. In March, the city’s public transport company presented the first TramLink tram produced by Stadler, as noted by Railway Supply, ahead of the move into regular operations.

With the start of TramLink trams Potsdam service, ViP is introducing a vehicle intended to improve comfort and day-to-day usability across the network. Stadler has positioned the project as part of a broader push for modern, sustainable mobility in the Brandenburg capital.

Capacity, doors and passenger layout

Stadler’s new TramLink trams are 42 metres long, around twelve metres longer than Potsdam’s previous Variobahn vehicles. Each unit can accommodate up to 246 passengers, including 74 seated.

Passenger flow has been part of the design, too. Eight wide doors are intended to make boarding and alighting quicker and more convenient. Inside, the trams feature a bright, spacious interior with step-free access and a generous layout aimed at delivering a pleasant travel experience.

Accessibility and onboard systems

The interior has been configured with different passenger groups in mind: parent-and-child seats provide extra space for families, and four multifunctional areas support the transport of prams. Two separate zones are wheelchair accessible.

Energy management and information features are also part of the Stadler TramLink package. The energy-optimised air conditioning adapts to occupancy, LED strips indicate the status of the doors, and an innovative bogie concept with continuous axles is intended to support a smooth and comfortable ride.

Other passenger-facing elements include USB sockets and a modern passenger information system. ViP says the Potsdam TramLink trams represent an investment in modern, sustainable and comfortable mobility for passengers across the city.

“With TramLink, we are bringing a vehicle to the tracks that combines maximum comfort, accessibility, and energy efficiency. We are proud to take this important step towards sustainable mobility in Potsdam together with ViP,” said Jure Mikolčić, CEO of Stadler Germany Division.
