Sale of locomotives: Stadler to supply modern trains for Swiss operators
17.12.2024
The sale of locomotives to RhB and MGB by Stadler totals CHF 100 million. This agreement aims to modernize fleets and enhance railway network efficiency across Switzerland. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

In addition to RhB and MGB, Morges-Bière-Cossonay Transport and Montreux-Berner Oberland Railway (MOB) support the project.

The partnership includes delivering locomotives with a track gauge of 1000 mm. These models operate on overhead electric power and diesel engines. Stadler will manufacture the locomotives at its Bussnang factory, located in Switzerland.
Sale of Locomotives to Rhaetian Railway (RhB)
Rhaetian Railway will receive eight locomotives, with five replacing outdated models within its fleet. The other three units will serve as reserves for emergencies on remote network sections. These backup trains ensure operational continuity and reliability during critical situations. The locomotives will reach speeds of 100 km/h with 1.5 MW of power on electric mode. Diesel operation will provide 1 MW of power for versatility in challenging areas.
Modern Sale of Locomotives for Matterhorn Gotthard Railway (MGB)
Matterhorn Gotthard Railway plans to acquire three locomotives to replace aging 1960s models. The new units will support snow removal and infrastructure repairs across the network. They will operate at speeds of 70 km/h and generate 1.3 MW of power using overhead lines. Diesel operation will deliver 700 kW of power for flexible performance in diverse conditions.
Swiss operators actively upgrade their rail fleets to align with modern efficiency and sustainability goals. In 2022, Siemens delivered 35 Vectron locomotives for SBB Cargo through a leasing deal with Reichmuth & Co Investment Management. In mid-2023, SBB Cargo International ordered 20 additional Vectron locomotives from SudLeasing, continuing modernization efforts.
The sale of locomotives by Stadler underlines the importance of innovative solutions for enhancing rail infrastructure. The new models ensure improved operational performance, reduced maintenance costs, and reliable long-term service.
Stadler remains a leader in the railway market by offering advanced, high-quality transport solutions. These efforts reflect Switzerland’s strategic focus on sustainable railway development and infrastructure modernization.
