Delivery of Battery-Diesel Hybrid Locomotives
13.10.2023
The freight operator Rumo has received two battery-diesel hybrid locomotives from Progress Rail EMD GT38H, which will store the energy generated during dynamic braking instead of dissipating it as heat, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply.
Rumo expects that these locomotives will use 45% less fuel and produce fewer emissions than the currently operated diesel locomotives, thanks to both the modern CAT 3512 engine and the batteries.

Other features include remote monitoring to help predict failures.
Six months of testing are planned on the 1600 mm gauge track between Guarapuava and Desvio Ribas. The route was chosen for its gradients and turns that require the use of compact locomotives.
These two hybrid locomotives will transport the same payload as trains that previously required six locomotives but with a higher overall speed.
Rumo manages a railway network spanning 14,000 km and has a fleet of 1,400 locomotives and 35,000 wagons.
