How Portland is Modernizing Public Transport with Siemens S700 Trams?

The Siemens S700 trams debuted on the city’s light rail MAX network after rigorous testing. Two trams successfully covered over 2,400 kilometers during trials before entering passenger service. Within the next few months, 30 additional trams will join operations across all five MAX lines.

Each tram accommodates up to 168 passengers, including 62 seated, ensuring better capacity and convenience. Unlike earlier Type 5 models delivered in 2014–2015, the Siemens S700 features a bidirectional design. Enhanced climate control and lighting systems further elevate passenger comfort, while predictive diagnostic technology reduces maintenance costs and minimizes downtime.

The new trams will gradually replace the Type 1 models, introduced by Bombardier Transportation in 1986. These modern vehicles combine innovative features and sustainable technology, offering smoother and more reliable rides for Portland residents.

Additionally, Siemens Mobility is fulfilling an order for 45 S700 trams for Sacramento. Production takes place at a local facility, ensuring faster delivery and supporting regional economic growth. The local manufacturing approach also maintains high quality across all trams.

Portland continues to prioritize sustainable technology, making its public transportation system more efficient and eco-friendly. Infrastructure improvements reduce traffic congestion and lower harmful emissions, benefiting both the environment and the community.
