Testing Ballastless Track Technology in Poland

PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe (PKP PLK) is conducting ballastless track technology trials at Kraków Przylasek station. The 200-meter section, built last year on the Podłęże – Kraków Mydlniki railway line, represents Poland’s first experience with this system.

The track design originates from Austria and has been successfully implemented in Germany, the United Kingdom, and other countries. Experts are analyzing its ability to withstand operational challenges while minimizing environmental impact.

Future Implementation of Ballastless Track Technology

PKP PLK is collaborating with the Railway Institute to monitor the track’s behavior under different conditions. Advanced testing equipment is being used to measure stability, noise reduction, and structural strength.

Final assessments will take place in September, and certification may follow if the infrastructure meets technical requirements. The results could pave the way for wider adoption, particularly in areas where reducing environmental impact is essential.

Ballastless track systems are commonly used in tunnels and locations requiring minimal maintenance due to their engineering benefits. The Kraków Przylasek trials will help determine their potential for Poland’s future high-speed railway corridors.
