PKP Intercity has started the procurement of electric trains for domestic transportation. The company plans to order 42 double-deck trains, with an option to purchase 30 more. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

procurement of electric trains

The total contract is worth €2.3 billion, and the trains must be delivered within 77 months from the date of signing.

The Development of Poland’s High-Speed Railway Infrastructure

The contract includes not only the procurement of trains but also maintenance services for 30 years. These electric trains are designed to run at speeds of at least 200 km/h. They will operate on 3 kV DC and 25 kV AC systems, making them versatile for different routes.

Technical specifications of the electric train procurement

The trains will be designed for long-distance travel and will accommodate up to 500 passengers. Passengers will benefit from seats with armrests, individual tables, and lighting. Additionally, Wi-Fi, power outlets, and USB ports will be available for device charging.

The trains will also feature air conditioning and a passenger information system. Security will be ensured through CCTV and a fire detection system. Both first-class and second-class cars will offer additional comfort to passengers.

Future plans and continued electric train procurement

The trains will meet the ETCS Level 1 and Level 2 requirements and will have onboard diagnostics and GPS systems. They will also be adapted to transport passengers with reduced mobility, in accordance with TSI PRM standards. These new trains will serve popular routes connecting Warsaw with major cities across Poland.

This order is the largest in the history of PKP Intercity. It also reflects the company’s preparation for the upcoming liberalization of the rail market, expected after 2030. The new electric trains will help PKP Intercity compete with other operators by offering modern and comfortable transportation.

Moreover, PKP Intercity has already signed several major contracts this year. At the beginning of the year, the company signed a deal with Newag for the delivery of 63 locomotives, with an option to order 32 more. The total contract value is €534.8 million.

Newag will also supply 35 dual-mode locomotives that can operate on both electrified and non-electrified lines. This contract, valued at €767.3 million, includes maintenance services for 10 years.

In April, PKP Intercity signed a contract to modernize 500 cars. Of these, 450 cars will be upgraded by PKP Intercity Remtrak, while the remaining 50 will be converted into multi-purpose vehicles. The value of these projects is €93.8 million and €107.2 million, respectively.

The company also signed a deal with H. Cegielski for the delivery of 300 new cars, with an option for an additional 150 cars. The total contract value is nearly €976.5 million.

PKP Intercity also plans to announce a tender for the procurement of high-speed trains capable of reaching speeds of up to 250 km/h.
