An old Sydney train station in Woollahra could finally open as part of a bold housing strategy that aims to add 25,000 new homes to the Eastern Suburbs. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The station, left incomplete since the 1970s, is now under review by the NSW government. Officials are considering rezoning the surrounding land to support residential towers and better public transport access.

Recent rejection of a major western Sydney development at Rosehill Gardens prompted authorities to search for alternative housing locations with strong transit links. Woollahra has emerged as a top contender.

Old Sydney train station may unlock residential growth

Government sources say the old Sydney train station could become a new stop on the Eastern Suburbs line. The line currently terminates at Bondi Junction, but an extension could support higher population density.

A report by the Centre for International Economics, commissioned by Premier Chris Minns, named Woollahra the most viable council for medium- and high-density housing. The suburb offers proximity to the city and strong transport potential.

Real estate prices reflect the area’s prestige. The median price for a three-bedroom house is $3.75 million, while a two-bedroom apartment averages $1.4 million, according to Domain.

New plan reignites hopes for long-abandoned station

Although past efforts to complete the station were shelved due to high costs and local opposition, current pressures on housing have revived interest. Officials believe it’s time to revisit the idea with urgency.

A government spokesperson said no official decision has been made, but emphasized their commitment to housing reform. “We’re doubling down on bold plans to build closer to the city and near public transport,” she said.

The NSW government’s housing goal is 377,000 new homes by 2029. Reviving the old Sydney train station could play a critical role in achieving that target while easing the housing crisis.
