Obstacle detection system on tram lines
27.05.2023
Bosch has started testing the new TFCW 2.0 obstacle detection system on a tram in Romania
The project is being carried out in the city of Cluj in collaboration with the engineering center of the German company, the local public transport operator CTP, and the technical university, reports railway journal Railway Supply with reference to Rollingstock.
For the tests, a three-section Imperio tram manufactured by the Romanian company Astra in 2021 was chosen.
The TFCW 2.0 system consists of a camera, a medium-range radar sensor, and a control unit.

It alerts the driver to the presence of obstacles on the track through audio and visual signals. If the driver does not react, the system can automatically stop the tram.
The first-generation TFCW system is already installed on more than 1,500 trams in the United States, Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, and Hungary.
In May of this year, it was also installed on 7 Bombardier Cityrunner trams in the Polish city of Łódź.
