NRC Faces Growing Threats of Vandalism

The Managing Director Dr. Kayode Opeifa stated that vandalism of signallings and power supplies poses a risk against the preservation of safe and efficient train running, disturbs services, and escalates maintenance expenditure.

He also confirmed that railway patrol teams had found a case of cable theft at Rigasa Train Station in Kaduna. At about 12:30 p.m. on 10 October, NRC staff found that a section of an electrical cable that was fixed to a crane had been severed and stolen. On intuition, a patrol led by Nigeria Police Railway Command ASP Abdullahi Bwajin traced and apprehended two suspects a short while after the theft.

The two suspects, 22 and 24 years old, both residents of Rigasa community, also admitted to having sold the stolen cable for roughly $62. They earned $20 each, and another gang member evaded arrest. NRC stated police are still investigating to arrest the third suspect and retrieve the stolen materials.

Dr. Opeifa commended the prompt response and professionalism of the Railway Command, saying that this kind of inter-agency cooperation is a testament to actual advances in securing public infrastructure. He stressed that culprits will have serious legal recourse because vandalism of a nation’s assets will now be prosecuted as economic sabotage according to the Nigerian code.

He clarified that the wrecked equipment is integral to integral safety systems that operate the trains and avert collisions. That kind of damage, he noted, can result in significant disruptions, resulting in either delay or escalate dangers faced by both passengers and freight.

The NRC is also going to reinforce cooperation with the Nigeria Police Force, Civil Defence Corps, and local security organizations with a view to tighten surveillance and sharing of information on corridors along railways. Dr. Opeifa says that new patrol corridors and roadblocks are also being introduced to protect substations, signal houses, and storage depots.

The company also wants to install more CCTV cameras and electronic tracking devices to be able to watch potential targets. Along with community involvement, these are designed to prevent future acts and prevent speedy response in both urban and rural locations.

Opeifa called on residents adjoining the railway lines to cooperate with the corporation in reporting suspected cases. He reiterated that the railway is an engine for economic development, connecting zones, creating employments, and enhancing logistics. Hence, securing it is not just a government obligation but a shared responsibility of everyone for whom that engine works.

In addition, he also mentioned that the NRC is further upgrading its work, increasing routes, and improving customer experience with digital tickets, enhanced scheduling, and modern stations.

Nevertheless, this can work positively only if the infrastructure is sound and secure. In order to engender public opinion, the NRC will conduct school and community center education programs along main corridors.

The programs will publicize the social and economic harm done by graffiti and urge citizens to safeguard common national property.
